SMSF vs Industry Super: Which Is Right for You?
Considering an SMSF? We compare the costs, flexibility, and control versus industry and retail super funds.
Self-managed super funds (SMSFs) have grown enormously in popularity, but they are not the right fit for everyone. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
What is an Industry Super Fund?
Industry super funds are large, professionally managed funds where your money is pooled with other members. They offer low fees, simple diversified investment options, and insurance. They require very little involvement from you.
What is an SMSF?
An SMSF is a private super fund you run yourself (or with a professional adviser). You are both the trustee and the member. You control the investment decisions, can invest in direct property, shares, term deposits, and more. There are up to six members allowed.
SMSF Advantages
- Full control over investment decisions
- Ability to invest in direct residential and commercial property
- Greater estate planning flexibility
- Ability to pool balances with family members
- Potential for better returns with the right strategy
SMSF Disadvantages
- Annual compliance costs ($2,000 to $5,000 typically)
- You are legally responsible as trustee
- Can be cost-ineffective with a balance under $200,000
- Requires time, knowledge, and engagement
- Insurance can be harder to obtain inside an SMSF
When Does an SMSF Make Sense?
An SMSF typically becomes cost-effective when combined member balances exceed $300,000 to $400,000. At that level, the fixed administration costs represent a smaller percentage of your balance, and the benefits of control and investment flexibility start to outweigh the costs.
Our Recommendation
For most Australians early in their career, an industry fund is perfectly appropriate. As your balance grows and your financial complexity increases, reviewing your super structure with a specialist becomes increasingly important. Our SMSF team can model the numbers for your exact situation.
